Heavy Equipment Operator - Landfill

Position Objectives:

Disposes of solid waste materials at landfill site by operating heavy equipment, and an automated conveyor system; repairs and maintains machinery and mechanical equipment such as the conveyor system.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Operate front-end loader, compactor, wheel scraper, dozer, dump truck, road grader, baler, or related heavy equipment utilized in pit construction, moving, covering, and compacting of waste deposited into city landfill and access road maintenance
  • Operate equipment to lift and transfer materials to processing areas, to feed conveyors, hoppers, or chutes
  • Observes waste to identify hazardous waste or other materials excluded from deposit in landfill
  • Perform random inspections of loads from the public to verify materials and prevent illegal dumping and ensure compliance with DANR, EPA, and air quality standards.
  • Direct incoming vehicles to correct dumping area.
  • Monitor customer activities to ensure compliance with established rules and regulations
  • Observe materials moving on conveyors to monitor flow and operation of system.
  • Perform sanding and snow/ice removal as needed.
  • Perform routine maintenance and emergency repairs and reports mechanical problems to Supervisor for repair.
  • Adhere to safety regulations and guidelines during all operations.
  • Keep work area clean and orderly, pick litter.

Minimum Requirements:

  • A high school diploma, GED or equivalent.
  • One to three months related experience and/or training.
  • Or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must maintain a valid South Dakota Driver’s License.

 

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must have ability to obtain Commercial Driver’s License, Class B with Air Brakes and Tanker Endorsement within 1 year of employment.
  • May be required to work outside the traditional work schedule.
  • May be subject to call-out and/or call-back.
  • SD Pesticide and Herbicide applicator license within 1 year.
