Police Officer I

Position Objectives:

Performs general police work in the protection of life and property, including conducting investigations of reported crimes and narcotic violations, responding to emergencies, and conducting public education programs.

Duties and Responsibilities:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Other duties may be assigned that are appropriate to this job description.

• Enforce local, state and federal laws, prevent and suppress crime and accidents, and promote public safety.
• Patrol areas of Belle Fourche, answer calls in emergency and non-emergency situations, and initiate action on matters coming to the attention of the officer, including preparing citations.
• Perform assigned police duties such as investigate traffic accidents, responding to emergency situations, family disturbances, public disorders, and crimes.
• Serve criminal process, including warrants and subpoenas, testify in court.
• Operate police vehicles in routine and emergency situations.
• Performs first aid and provides other assistance to accident and other victims.
• Provide appropriate emotional and physical support for victims of violent crimes, accidents and emergencies.
• Control traffic and guard large public gatherings.
• Inspects public establishments requiring licenses to ensure compliance with rules and regulations.
• Operates police communication and computer equipment to obtain, disseminate, and report information.
• Testifies in court to present evidence by describing conditions, situations and actions.

Minimum Requirements:

• A high school diploma, GED or equivalent.

• Live within the State of South Dakota

• Vision:  20/20 Corrected
• Candidates must be 21 years of age at time of hire.
• Must maintain a valid South Dakota Driver’s License.
